Powering the future of long-haul trucking: Milence leads Europe’s EV charging revolution

In the latest episode of The Future of Convenience podcast, hosts Carolyn Schnare and Dan Munford take listeners to the forefront of Europe’s heavy-duty electric vehicle (EV) transformation. Guest, Cathrin Iden, network sales manager for the Nordics at Milence, offers a first-hand look at how the company is accelerating the shift toward fossil-free freight transport.

Founded in July 2022 as a joint venture between Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, and Traton Group, Milence is on a mission to drive and support the transition to zero-emission heavy trucks vehicles across Europe. The ambition is as bold as it is urgent: by the end of 2025, Milence aims to have 40 operational sites across nine European markets, with further expansion planned.

Sweden, a frontrunner in EV truck infrastructure, has been a proving ground for Milence’s vision. “Sweden is one of the leading countries we’ve been quite early with, especially building the network in Sweden,” Cathrin notes, pointing to key routes such as Stockholm to Malmö, Stockholm to Oslo, and the E20 “green highway.”

But building charging stations is just one piece of the puzzle. Milence is redefining what a charging stop means for truck drivers, with secure, driver-focused facilities that go beyond plugging in. “We are building a very safe and secure rest and recharge areas” with lounges, toilets, showers, free Wi-Fi, and fenced outdoor areas, says Cathrin. These hubs are designed exclusively for heavy electric trucks, protecting both high-value cargo and driver wellbeing. With driver recruitment a growing challenge in Europe, Milence’s approach also aims to attract new talent, including younger and female drivers, by improving comfort and safety standards.

From the secure gates of Varberg Nord to a continent-spanning network, Milence is delivering the infrastructure to make electric long-haul trucking not just possible, but practical. As this episode makes clear, the future of freight is being built now and Milence is paving the way.
