Circle K + AI: Transforming recruitment, onboarding and training at scale
Although many retailers are talking about AI, only a few are implementing it. Insight CEO Dan Munford recently went to Ireland to investigate Circle K’s latest AI developments as part of Insight Research’s ‘AI Round Table’ initiative, interviewing Ireland Managing Director Ciara Foxton, Director People Development Europe Jens Rye and Kill North Store Manager Lisa Collins.
What is clear is that Circle K has transformed how it attracts, onboards, and empowers its 10,000+ new hires each year across 5,200 stores in 12 European markets. The company’s comprehensive, technology and AI-driven transformation programs – now shortlisted for the NACS Technology of the Year Award – is illustrative of Circle K’s commitment to innovative solutions and the use of AI in retail.
Tackling the talent crunch
In 2023, fierce competition for frontline talent drove Circle K’s turnover to over 80 percent on average, with many new hires departing within 30 days. Store managers spent countless hours on administrative tasks and recruiting, leaving little time to lead the store team and interact with customers on the shop floor. Circle K’s People Development team saw an urgent need for a more structured, scalable solution.
What happened next was interesting. The Circle K team reimagined recruitment as a two-part, mobile-first experience, rather than a pile of CVs to sort through. A situational judgment test immerses candidates in Circle K’s daily store life. A personal assessment then evaluates their fit for a fast-paced work environment. AI and predictive analytics instantly rank applicants according to their suitability for the role, so managers can quickly prioritize the right candidates for the job.
Immersive onboarding from day one
Circle K analysis showed 26 percent of new hires left within the first 30 days on the job due to lack of training. To address this, Circle K took the best practices from every market and built them into one streamlined European, onboarding platform. New employees complete interactive digital modules and practical hands-on tasks together, guided by engaging gamified training with AI-personalized feedback, to build confidence and capability from their first shift.
With more than 3.2 million customer encounters daily across Circle K stores in Europe, ongoing training is crucial. Working with Attensi, Circle K introduced a game-based “Customer Star” program, where team members are challenged in areas like “Shine on the Till” and “Feel the Pressure.” AI adapts scenarios to each learner’s strengths and gaps, while competitions like “Beat the Boss” foster a winning team culture at scale across markets.
The company’s investment in transforming operations through innovative technology is already creating large scale impact, reaping awards and supporting Circle K’s customer-centric focus through operational excellence and engaged team members.
