Site Overview

The Mönchengladbach hub redefines the EV charging experience through its thoughtful design and plentiful amenities. The site layout includes 28 charging bays arranged in a spacious configuration, complemented by a state-of-the-art REWE To Go smart store. This unmanned retail space, developed by Aral’s strategic partner Lekkerland, offers 24/7 shopping through an innovative AI-powered system using cameras and weight sensors for automatic purchase recognition.

The site serves a diverse clientele, from football supporters heading to matches and commuters heading into the city, to local residents and long-distance travellers. The customer demographic spans private EV owners and fleet vehicles, reflecting its strategic location near both urban areas and major transport routes.

Amenities on offer include a comfortable indoor lounge area with ample seating, providing a cosy environment rarely found at traditional charging locations in Germany. Customers also enjoy access to high-speed Wi-Fi, self-cleaning toilet facilities, and a carefully curated selection of food, beverages, and convenience items in the smart store. The site’s digital screens provide real-time information, while the open layout ensures easy navigation between charging points and facilities. Solar panels on the roof of the hub cover a proportion of the site’s electricity requirements.

EV Charging

The Mönchengladbach hub features 28 ultra-fast charging bays. These bp-owned and operated chargers can each deliver up to 400 kilowatts of power, depending on the vehicle technology. The charging infrastructure operates under the Aral pulse brand, which was named best fast charging provider in Germany by Connect Magazine in 2024 for the second year running, maintaining consistent quality and reliability across the network.

The site’s grid connection supports simultaneous high-power charging across all bays. A rooftop solar installation helps to power the site. The charging area features protective canopies, shielding users from bad weather while charging.

Each charging bay benefits from enhanced lighting for 24/7 operation and clear bay markings for easy navigation. The layout ensures comfortable spacing between vehicles, with each position designed to accommodate various vehicle sizes, from compact cars to larger electric vans. Digital displays at each charger provide real-time charging information and guidance, while the site’s smart systems monitor charging sessions and manage power distribution efficiently across all units.

bp knows that the overall charging experience is important and has ensured that the hub provides a comfortable and convenient place for drivers to charge and unwind around the clock. The customer lounge in the REWE To Go smart store provides just that.

Utilisation rate

As a new site, the hub is experiencing growing adoption rates aligned with the expanding EV market in Germany. The site’s strategic location and comprehensive facilities position it well for increasing utilisation as the number of electric vehicles on the road continues to grow in the region.

Both the number of kWhs sold and the number of sessions in Mönchengladbach in December 2024 were well above the average for the entire charging network and the number of sessions was almost twice as high.

Uptime

Despite being unmanned, the charging hub prioritises reliability through comprehensive monitoring systems and maintenance schedules. bp ensures that the site can deliver a reliable service to get drivers back out on the road quickly and efficiently.

Maintenance

The Mönchengladbach hub employs sophisticated remote monitoring systems that provide real-time status updates for all charging points. Any technical issues are quickly identified and addressed through a combination of remote diagnostics and rapid on-site response when necessary.

The maintenance team follows comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. Regular software updates and system checks are performed during off-peak hours to minimise any impact on customer experience.

Additional Mobility offers

The charging hub offers 28 ultra-fast charging bays where customers can charge up to 300 kilometres of range withing ten minutes, depending on their vehicle. In addition, a solar power system was installed on the roof of the facility, which covers a portion of the charging hub’s electricity requirements.

This hub represents a step into the future of mobility, with the decision made to focus exclusively on charging and enhancing the EV driver customer experience without including traditional fuel options.

Integrated Customer Journey

bp is proud to have launched Mönchengladbach as a world-class EV hub that provides exceptional customer experiences. The digital ecosystem at Mönchengladbach creates a seamless experience from journey planning through to departure. Customers can easily locate the hub and check charger availability through the Aral pulse app and various third-party platforms. Digital screens throughout the site provide real-time information about charging status and available amenities.

The integration of high quality, state of the art, AI-powered retail technology with the charging experience demonstrates bp’s forward-thinking approach to customer service. The smart store’s system automatically tracks customers’ selection of products, enabling effortless purchasing without queues or traditional checkouts. In the unmanned shop, charging hub users, residents and other customers can shop around the clock. Thanks to AI, supported by cameras and weight sensors, the checkout system automatically recognises which items customers have selected.

bp’s digital infrastructure also enables personalised communications and targeted offers, enhancing customer engagement while respecting privacy preferences. This technology-driven approach ensures that every customer’s visit to the hub is efficient, enjoyable, and tailored to their individual needs.

Integrated technology also enables accessibility and convenience through payment options. The digital screens at the bays can connect to in-app payment, making payment seamless and stress free from mobile phones.

Ease of Payment

Aral pulse Mönchengladbach offers comprehensive and flexible payment options to ensure convenient charging access for all drivers. Payment options include credit and debit cards with EMV technology, via the Aral pulse app, QR code-initiated web payments, and dedicated charging cards or RFID solutions for fleet customers.

bp understands that pricing transparency is really important for customers, with clear per-kWh rates displayed at each charging point. Customers receive real-time updates on their charging progress and costs, with final session totals clearly shown upon completion. The integration of various payment methods with the site’s digital systems ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience across all touchpoints.

bp understands that there is still some hesitancy around EV ownership, often due to its remaining relatively new and a lack of understanding. Creating a clear and transparent pricing and payment infrastructure is crucial for sustainable long term EV adoption.
