Vusion’s solutions help retailers transform physical stores into more intelligent and efficient environments. By connecting supply chain, pricing and store operations through real-time data, retailers can improve operational performance, support local e-commerce fulfilment and deliver more consistent in-store experiences for shoppers.
Set the Scene
Kavanagh’s Belsize Park operates in an affluent area of North London, offering approximately 8,000 products across fresh food, artisan suppliers and over-the-counter services. Like many physical retailers, the store generates vast amounts of data from transactions and stock levels to pricing and promotions, yet historically much of this data has been fragmented across disconnected systems. The challenge is not a lack of data, but a lack of real-time visibility and actionable insight.
In partnership with Vusion, Kavanagh’s has addressed this challenge by transforming its store into a fully connected, data-driven environment. The result is the UK’s first Vusion360 “Self-Learning Store,” a pioneering concept that demonstrates how physical retail can operate with the intelligence and responsiveness of a digital ecosystem.
By integrating Vusion’s latest technologies, including the Bluetooth-enabled Digital Shelf System (EdgeSense), Captana (AI-powered computer vision), VusionLive (retail analytics) and VusionCloud, the store has evolved from manual, reactive processes to a proactive, insight-led operation. Pricing updates are executed instantly, competitor pricing is tracked daily, and shelves are continuously monitored. Store colleagues are guided by real-time recommendations, enabling them to take the most effective actions across stock management, waste reduction, merchandising, promotions and underperforming products.
This transformation has delivered measurable and significant results. Store waste has reduced from 3% to 1.25%, while price accuracy is now consistently maintained at 100%. Tasks that once took considerable time, such as identifying short shelf-life products, have been reduced from approximately one hour per day to just 20 minutes through VusionLive and product geolocation.
The store also maintains a highly competitive pricing position, tracking key competitors such as Tesco and operating within a price index range of 110–112. Enhanced product labelling, including attribute badges such as “high protein,” “high fibre” and “low carbon,” has driven like-for-like sales growth of approximately 20%.
Operational excellence has also improved significantly. Shelf availability, powered by Captana’s computer vision, consistently exceeds 98%, an industry-leading benchmark. In the bakery, the implementation of the Vusion Self-Learning Bakery solution has reduced waste by around 30% while increasing like-for-like cash margin by over 20%.
Even in challenging trading conditions, such as reduced footfall caused by roadworks and the removal of nearby parking, the store has continued to improve profitability. The use of automated ESL messaging increased sales of underperforming products by 300% within a single month (March 2026).
Kavanagh’s Belsize Park demonstrates that the future of physical retail lies in self-learning environments. By harnessing connected technologies and real-time data, the store continuously optimises performance across operations, colleagues and on-shelf execution, ultimately delivering a better customer experience, fresher products and higher satisfaction.
Innovation Overview
Vusion360 brings together the full suite of Vusion’s connected store technologies. It is an integrated shelf-edge operating solution that digitises pricing, monitoring and in-store communication in one platform.
In many stores, pricing, shelf checks and promotions are still done manually. Store teams spend hours changing paper tickets, scanning shelves for gaps and manually checking promotions, all of which consume valuable time. Vusion360 addresses these issues by creating a connected store environment that provides a complete and up-to-date view of what is happening across the shop floor.
At its heart, Vusion360 enables data collected across systems to be transformed into actionable recommendations. Electronic shelf labels allow prices and promotions to be updated instantly across the store. Shelf monitoring technology identifies out-of-stock items and alerts staff when shelves need attention. Expiry management tools highlight products approaching their sell-by date using flashing digital labels so that teams can quickly take action. All of this information is managed through the VusionCloud platform that helps store teams prioritise tasks and maintain accurate store operations.
At Kavanagh’s Belsize Park, this system has created a more responsive store environment where problems are identified early and resolved quickly, helping staff spend more time serving customers.
Challenge & Opportunity
Kavanagh’s Belsize Park is a truly independent, premium convenience store with a strong focus on fresh food and local service. Despite the ongoing cost of living crisis, owners of the store were still seeing a demand for quality, local produce and an offering that met ethical standards. The challenge for Kavanagh’s of Belsize was being able to provide this while operating efficiently, sustainably, and innovating with agility.
As a convenience store, Kavanagh’s operates in a volatile and challenging market. The opportunity that emerged was not simply to digitise pricing or automate a few tasks; it was to rethink how the store operated by turning the shelf edge into a source of real-time intelligence, whilst enhancing the customer experience and building customer trust.
By introducing Vusion360, Kavanagh’s moved from reactive store management to a smarter model where issues are identified early, staff time is used more effectively, and the customer experience remains consistently high.
Partnerships & Ecosystem Collaboration
The success of the store is built on a close and ongoing partnership between Vusion and Kavanagh’s. Rather than deploying technology as a standalone solution, both teams worked together to integrate a connected ecosystem of tools directly into the store environment.
At the core of this ecosystem is a Bluetooth-connected infrastructure, with EdgeSense rails linking shelf-edge devices directly to the cloud. This enables real-time data flow across the store while removing the need for battery-powered labels, reducing maintenance and supporting sustainability goals.
The Bluetooth powered system streamlined integration with Kavanagh’s existing store operations by removing the need for additional critical infrastructure.
Store teams were actively involved throughout the process, providing feedback on how the technology could best support day-to-day tasks. This collaborative approach ensured the solution was practical, easy to use and aligned with the store’s operational needs, while also preparing the business for future innovation.
Setup & Early Experiments
Kavanagh’s digital transformation began in 2023 with the installation of Vusion electronic shelf labels, replacing paper price tags and creating a digital foundation for future capabilities. This immediately reduced the time spent on manual ticket changes, freeing up at least 10 hours per week for store associates.
A key early development was the integration of Smartway’s AI-powered expiry management solution. This enabled the store to automatically identify products approaching their expiry date through flashing digital labels. Staff have saved up to 2 hours a day by removing the need to manually check products.
During the early stages, the system was tested alongside normal store operations. Staff worked closely with the implementation team to confirm that alerts were accurate and that tasks generated by the system were practical.
This phased approach gave the store confidence in the technology while ensuring each new capability developed by Vusion delivered clear operational benefits and acted as a precedent for the installation of Vusion360 technologies.
Digital & Data Enablement
Technology and data are central to how the store operates. Connected platforms across the Vusion ecosystem work together to turn real-time store signals into clear operational insights, enabled by the Bluetooth connected shelf-edge infrastructure.
EdgeSense rails replaced traditional ESLs with a fully connected system that power labels and sensors directly from the rail. Captana, Vusion’s computer vision platform, continuously monitors shelves to detect out-of-stock items and merchandising issues. At the same time, Pulse enables digital communication at the shelf edge, allowing Kavanagh’s to display product information, promotions, trends and messaging directly to shoppers.
All this data is brought together through VusionCloud, where signals from across the store are analysed and translated into practical insights for store teams.
Scaling the Innovation
Kavanagh’s scaled its innovation through a phased, low-disruption approach that built capability over time. Following the initial rollout of Vusion’s Electronic Shelf Labels, the introduction of Vusion360 marked a shift to a fully integrated, data-driven store environment. Early deployment enabled store teams to adapt through targeted training, embedding confidence in digital pricing and processes.
This foundation supported the next phase: the installation of Bluetooth-enabled EdgeSense rails. The connected rail powers ESLs and enables real-time price and promotion updates, improving accuracy while eliminating manual label replacement.
To support scale, operational processes were redesigned, moving from manual tasks to centralised digital control, freeing staff to focus on customer-facing activities. Infrastructure was also strengthened to improve reliability and simplify maintenance.
By scaling incrementally, Kavanagh’s minimised disruption while continuously unlocking new value, creating a repeatable, future-ready connected store model.
Operational Transformation
The introduction of Vusion360 has fundamentally changed how the store operates daily. Kavanagh’s now benefits from technology solutions throughout the retail journey: from fresh produce and food waste management, to store operations and local e-commerce, through to retail media and merchandising.
Previously, many store processes relied on manual checks and reactive decision-making. The integrations of Captana and Pulse with trading and inventory data has enable a more proactive approach to store management. The store has saved roughly 120 hours per month for ticket changes with increased agility.
Pricing, replenishment and markdowns are no longer based on periodic checks, but on continuous, data-driven insights. Teams can also now identify issues such as gaps, pricing discrepancies or expiring products as they happen, rather than after the fact – with 100% pricing accuracy.
The result is a more efficient, responsive and data-driven store environment where teams can focus on customers rather than manual tasks.
Setbacks & Pivots
Our approach to working closely in partnership with the store team allowed us to avoid a number of potential challenges or at least identify them at the time and act to prevent any disruptions.
One key aspect is that members of the Vusion team right through to Executive level, spend time in the store to make sure there is a first- hand experience of what it is like to operate and use the solution thereby having a greater appreciation of where enhancements and “tweaks” can be made to smooth the store team’s and the shoppers’ experience. This has included having Vusion employees have a day or two working in the store as a member of staff.
We learned that there are always ways in which insight can be presented better and how practical usage can be improved. This only comes from being on the ground, listening and acting based on store feedback. This has enabled us to apply such improvements to other client’s stores. Kavanagh’s are always happy to be in the lead in driving benefits beyond their own business.
In the early days we realised there is so much that the connected 360 store can deliver that it was too much to expect the store team to absorb in a short space of time, especially how to apply the insights. So, we focused on a key topic at a time and ran dedicated short workshops to train the management team and support how that would be actioned. So, this is now our standard approach.
Impact & Results
The implementation of Vusion360 at Kavanagh’s Belsize Park has delivered measurable impact across operational efficiency, profitability and sustainability.
Shelf monitoring and AI-driven insights have improved on-shelf availability to 98–99%, ensuring customers consistently find the products they need. At the same time, Captana and EdgeSense AI have enabled more accurate inventory management, contributing to a 7% reduction in overstock and improving fulfilment of e-commerce orders.
Waste reduction has been another key outcome. Fresh produce waste has been reduced by up to 49%, while bakery waste decreased by 56% through improved pricing agility and data-driven markdowns, resulting in a 21% increase in profit for this section. Overall, these improvements have contributed to a 60% decrease in overall waste and a 7% increase in operational profit.
Efficiency gains have been significant. ESLs have removed the need for manual ticket changes, saving 120 hours per month, while broader process improvements have unlocked over 160 hours of staff time. For example, in the Dairy section, associates saw a 78% time reduction, while also saving 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per month.
Customer-facing improvements have also been clear. The introduction of digital engagement through shelf-edge media has delivered up to an 80% increase in sales in food to go and wine sections. For promotional endcaps, improvements delivered up to 300% sales uplift.
Together, these results demonstrate how connected store technology can deliver measurable impact while improving the experience of both associates and customers.
Scalability & Future Potential
Noel Kavanagh Jr, Managing Director, Kavanagh’s Group, said: “We’re only scratching the surface. The technology is extremely impressive, and I would recommend it to any other fellow retailers”.
The Vusion360 model is designed to scale across a wide range of retail environments, from independent convenience stores to large supermarket networks. Because the platform is built on Bluetooth enabled connected shelf-edge infrastructure and cloud software, retailers can adopt it progressively. Many begin with ESLs and then expand into additional capabilities such as real-time shelf monitoring, automated expiry management and data-driven store insights.
The success of Kavanagh’s Belsize Park demonstrates how connected shelf-edge technology can transform everyday store management while preserving the personal service that defines neighbourhood retail.
As adoption grows, Vusion360 has the potential to become the digital operating system for physical retail stores worldwide.
