Innovation Overview
Our smart innovation is an AI‑driven facility management platform called “aurora”, that turns vending‑led service spaces into intelligent, low‑touch micro‑stores across new builds and existing petrol stations and EV hubs. It connects vending, HVAC, lighting, access, sanitation and media systems into one smart control layer that optimizes energy, uptime and customer comfort in real time.
We were inspired by the gap between fast‑growing EV and forecourt traffic and the lack of profitable, staff‑light service infrastructure at these locations. Our broader goal is to help operators run scalable, sustainable, largely unattended networks of service points that still feel premium for customers.
This places our solution in the categories of in‑store intelligence, customer engagement and sustainability, by using data and AI to raise service quality while reducing energy use and operating effort.
Challenge & Opportunity
We address critical pain points for both operators and customers at petrol stations and EV hubs.
Operator pain points
- Low margins and high staff costs for running traditional shops, especially at low‑traffic times; our unattended, vending‑led concept enables 24/7 service with minimal staffing.
- Low utilization at certain EV charging sites; more attractive sites invite EV drivers to charge more often and longer
- Vandalism, weather damage and poor visibility of remote sites; our protected modules with video surveillance and remote monitoring secure assets and reduce unplanned outages.
- Fragmented building systems and high energy use; our AI facility layer unifies control, cuts energy costs and simplifies operations across multiple locations.
Customer pain points
- Lack of food, drinks and clean restrooms outside shop opening hours or at pure charging hubs; our solutions provide always‑available vending and sanitary facilities.
- Feeling unsafe or uncomfortable at night or in remote locations; lighting, cameras and modern, climate‑controlled spaces create a safer, more pleasant stop.
Partnerships & Ecosystem Collaboration
Our innovation is built together with a network of specialist partners. We collaborate closely with manufacturers of vending solutions, smart building and IoT technology providers, and software development companies. Each partner contributes deep expertise in their domain – from reliable payment and telemetry in the vending hardware to secure building automation and cloud‑based analytics. eccovia’s role is to integrate these components into one coherent, vendor‑agnostic system for operators of petrol stations and EV hubs, so that all devices work together as a single smart layer. The solution is live in first applications and continues to evolve jointly with our partners.
Setup & Early Experiments
We started with small, highly instrumented pilot modules at Milence truck charging parks.
In these first sites, we connected vending machines, HVAC, lighting, access control and cameras into a single backend, mainly to test stable connectivity, remote control and alerting. We logged detailed telemetry data from the vending systems (sales, stock levels, errors) and combined it with building data (temperature, energy consumption, door openings, occupancy proxies) to understand real usage patterns. On top of this, we introduced simple automation rules and first AI models, for example to adjust climate and lighting based on time, weather and expected occupancy, and to predict maintenance needs of vending equipment. These early pilots allowed us to validate the functionality, added user value and harden the platform before scaling to more complex lounge and sanitary modules and retrofits in existing forecourt buildings.
Digital & Data Enablement
Our innovation places technology and data at the core of future-ready mobility retail. We consolidate all relevant data—from smart building systems, EV charging hubs, and vending machines across petrol stations—into a unified data lake. This integrated platform enables real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and intelligent automation of operations. By connecting previously siloed systems, we unlock actionable insights that optimize energy usage, improve asset performance, and personalize the customer experience. Our solution empowers operators to anticipate demand, reduce downtime, and maximize revenue streams while enhancing sustainability. In essence, our data-driven ecosystem transforms charging parks and petrol stations into adaptive, intelligent environments. Ensuring efficient, scalable, and profitable operations for the mobility hubs of tomorrow.
Scaling the Innovation
We began with small pilot installations to validate our concept, connecting data from smart building systems, EV charging hubs, and vending machines into a unified data lake. These early tests helped us prove the value of centralized data for improving transparency, identifying inefficiencies, and enabling better operational decisions.
Today, our software is at 75% development maturity. We are still refining integrations, stabilizing the platform, and expanding core features such as real-time monitoring and analytics. As a young startup, we operate with a lean team and strong partners, allowing us to iterate quickly based on pilot feedback.
We are not scaling yet, but actively preparing for it—building a modular, API-driven architecture and seeking strategic partners to support deployment, infrastructure, and market access. Our focus now is to complete development and lay the foundation for scalable, data-driven operations.
Operational Transformation
Our innovation has not yet fully reshaped day-to-day operations, as the solution is still under development and being tested in pilot environments. However, early results already show a shift from fragmented, manual processes toward more centralized and data-driven decision-making.
By bringing together data from smart building systems, EV charging hubs, and vending machines into a single platform, we are laying the foundation for more efficient monitoring, faster issue detection, and improved operational transparency. While these changes are not yet fully realized at scale, they indicate how daily operations can become more proactive, automated, and insight-driven in the near future.
Setbacks & Pivots
Things did not go as planned in 2024 and 2025, as market conditions were challenging and customer investment budgets for innovations like ours were significantly constrained. This slowed down adoption and limited the pace at which we could deploy and validate our solution in real-world environments.
In response, we adapted our approach by focusing on partnerships rather than direct scaling. A key step was collaborating with Stracke GmbH, an established player in the petrol station shopfitting business. This partnership allows us to better access the market, align our solution with existing customer needs, and integrate our technology into broader infrastructure projects.
Through this, we learned the importance of ecosystem collaboration and adjusted our strategy toward building strong, complementary partnerships as a foundation for future growth.
Impact & Results
As we are still in development and pilot phases, we have not yet achieved large-scale measurable outcomes. Financial impact and broad operational improvements are therefore not fully realized at this stage.
However, early pilots indicate promising potential: we see improved data transparency, initial insights into energy usage and asset performance, and the ability to monitor operations more centrally. From a customer-experience perspective, we are beginning to enable more consistent and responsive service through better visibility of on-site systems.
At this point, our focus is on validating these early signals, refining the platform, and preparing for future measurement at scale. The groundwork is in place, but measurable impact will come with broader deployment.
Scalability & Future Potential
Our solution has the potential to evolve into a standard data backbone for modern mobility retail, connecting smart buildings, EV charging infrastructure, and retail systems into one intelligent ecosystem. Across our business, the next step is to complete development, strengthen integrations, and validate scalability through real-world deployments.
A key priority in our roadmap is to expand pilot projects. We are actively looking for forward-thinking petrol stations and CPO (charge point operator) sites across Europe to collaborate on pilot installations. These partnerships will allow us to generate real usage data, further refine our platform, and already deliver operational improvements in energy management, asset performance, and customer experience.
In the wider retail industry, this approach could enable more automated, data-driven, and adaptive operations—transforming traditional sites into intelligent hubs that continuously optimize performance and respond to customer needs in real time.
