Centra’s Cormac Dawson on blending local insight with national scale
Centra is redefining what convenience looks like in Ireland where expectations are constantly shifting. In this week’s Future of Convenience podcast episode, Cormac Dawson, sales director at Centra, outlines how the Irish retailer is balancing operational efficiency with a distinctly local, community-driven model.
At the core of Centra’s approach is a belief that scale and independence are not mutually exclusive. Instead, the brand leans into both. By combining the strength of a national network with the insight of local retailers, Centra has created a model that resonates across urban and rural markets alike.
That community connection is not just a brand value. It actively shapes how stores operate, from tailored product ranges to localized decision making. Retailers are encouraged to adapt based on their customers, supported by centralized tools and shared learnings across the network. The result is a format strategy that feels consistent but never standardized.
Alongside this, Centra is investing heavily in efficiency, particularly in foodservice. Store layouts, deli operations, and ordering systems are all being rethought to remove friction, both for staff and customers. Partnerships and insights from global leaders have helped refine everything from kitchen flow to front-of-house technology, ensuring stores can deliver speed without sacrificing quality.
Foodvenience remains a key battleground, and Centra continues to push forward with its coffee brand, ‘Frank and Honest.’ What started as an inconsistent in-store offer has evolved into a nationally recognized platform, now serving millions of cups annually.
“We’re selling 26 million cups of coffee a year and that is phenomenal. [It is] only ten years old as a brand and we’re looking to bring it on further. We can’t rest on our laurels there. As you say, in Ireland, there’s a lot of competition, a lot of rivalry in this coffee space, so how we keep updating it is going to be key,” Dawson notes, highlighting both the scale and pace of growth.
A quirky, fun video series debuted last year that brought national celebrities to Centra’s largest location. Centra Deli Drama series has scored more than a million views online and is definitely worth watching!
Looking ahead, the focus is clear. Centra is not standing still. From expanding its forecourt presence to tapping into social-driven trends and evolving customer missions, the brand is positioning itself as more than just a place to shop. It is aiming to act like a lifestyle brand, staying agile in a fast-moving landscape.
