Foodvenience

EUROSPAR Glenwell’s foodvenience offer has been transformed through a £5.5m refurbishment and relaunch as Henderson Retail’s flagship store for 2026. The investment increased the store’s footprint by more than 70%, added over 1,700 products and created 47 new jobs, bringing the team to 91 colleagues.

At its heart is Glenwell’s Fresh Market, which brings together food for now, food for later, fresh and local products, quality and value under one roof. The opening aisle creates Henderson Retail’s largest Fresh Food Promenade to date, connecting produce, Meals Market, local butchery, fish, bakery, Delish and Barista Bar coffee in one intuitive journey.

The transformation includes a new 1,400 sq. ft. production kitchen, full Delish offer, extended Fresh Bar, island hot-food fixture, chicken pick ‘n’ mix, Southern Fried Chicken, fresh bakery, three Barista Bar machines and Mayfield’s local butchery.

The proposition was informed by customer research and designed around breakfast, lunch, coffee, snacking, top-up shopping and tonight’s tea. Shopper requests directly influenced the introduction of healthier options, including overnight oats, porridge, protein breakfast products, grain bowls, freshly made soup and egg and spinach pots.

Overview

EUROSPAR Glenwell’s foodservice programme is built around a clear customer promise: fresh, fast, local and convenient food throughout the day. Its Fresh Market combines food for now, food for later, Delish, Barista Bar, fresh bakery, Meals Market, Mayfield’s butchery and a 1,400 sq. ft. production kitchen.

The store supports two complementary customer groups. Local residents use Glenwell for fresh food, convenient top-up shops and tonight’s tea. Commuters, local workers, fuel customers and transient shoppers visit for breakfast, coffee, lunch and quick convenience missions. The objective is to make Glenwell part of customers’ daily routine while encouraging larger and more frequent fresh-food shops.

What differentiates Glenwell is how these missions are connected. Customers move from produce and chef-prepared meals through butchery and bakery into Delish and coffee, combining supermarket range with convenience-store speed.

Since the refurbished store launched on 24 April 2026, average weekly Food Solutions sales have increased by 44%, outperforming total store sales growth of 30%. Food Solutions participation has increased by 12%.

In the week ending 16 August 2026, Provisions sales increased by 215% year on year, demonstrating the strength of Glenwell’s food-to-go and serviced-food offer.

Menu and signature products

Glenwell’s menu combines established favourites, healthier choices, indulgent treats and freshly prepared meal solutions. Signature areas include Delish food-to-go, the extended Fresh Bar, island hot food, chicken pick ‘n’ mix, Southern Fried Chicken, Barista Bar, fresh bakery, Krispy Kreme, Mayfield’s butchery and the Meals Market.

The 1,400 sq. ft. production kitchen provides freshly prepared food for now and convenient meals that customers can take home, heat and eat. Shopper-led healthier choices include grain bowls, soup made in-store, egg and spinach pots, yogurt and fruit pots, overnight oats, porridge, protein breakfast wraps and breakfast muffins.

Customer response is reflected in category performance. In the week ending 16 August 2026, Hot Snacks increased by 127% year on year, while Treats increased by 278%.

Fresh bakery sales have increased by 224% since launch. Cookies are the leading fresh bakery segment, accounting for approximately 15% of fresh bakery sales.

Daypart specific offers

Glenwell’s strategy is designed around distinct customer missions throughout the day. Breakfast is supported by Barista Bar coffee, porridge, overnight oats, yogurt and fruit pots, protein breakfast wraps and breakfast muffins, giving commuters, local workers and early shoppers quick, convenient choices.

The strongest-performing Food Solutions daypart is 11am to 2pm. Lunch is served through Delish, the extended Fresh Bar, hot food, soup made in-store, grain bowls, Southern Fried Chicken and self-selection fixtures. This breadth has helped establish Glenwell as a local lunchtime destination.

Afternoon and snacking missions are supported by fresh bakery, made-in-store doughnuts, cookies, Krispy Kreme, coffee and treats. Later in the day, the Meals Market and production kitchen provide freshly prepared meals that customers can take home, heat and eat. This “tonight’s tea” mission is further strengthened through Glenwell’s partnership with trusted, award-winning local butcher Mayfield’s, offering customers a wider choice of fresh, locally sourced meat and poultry for quality meals at home.

Together, these complementary offers have helped increase average weekly Food Solutions sales by 44% since the refurbished store launched.

Speed, consistency and quality

Glenwell balances speed, consistency and quality through purpose-built food areas, efficient preparation methods, an intuitive customer journey and strong operating standards.

The redesigned layout provides wider aisles, improved service areas, larger trolley self-checkouts, express card-only checkouts and better flow between coffee, bakery, self-selection food-to-go and serviced counters. This reduces pinch points and makes individual food missions easier to complete.

The bakery model was developed to improve profitability and labour efficiency without compromising quality. Standard Rational ovens reduce equipment requirements, while selected products arrive ready for teams to flash bake, top, finish or decorate in-store. This includes large breads and rolls, round fruit soda and wheaten, finger rolls and made-in-store doughnuts.

Technology supports consistency through digital navigation, Electronic Shelf Edge Labels and AI-driven stock ordering. These are reinforced by structured training, operational audits, food safety action plans, production planning and oven programmes developed with Rational and the product development team.

Variety and innovation

Variety is central to Glenwell’s offer. The refurbishment added more than 1,700 products and introduced new concepts across breakfast, lunch, snacking, tonight’s tea, bakery, coffee, fresh grocery and local butchery. It also added 30% more produce space, 30 fresh-food bays and 47 ambient bays.

Innovation is most visible in the Fresh Market, which brings produce, Meals Market, butchery, fish, local bakery, fresh bakery, Delish and coffee together in the opening aisle. The production kitchen strengthens food for later through locally sourced meals freshly prepared in-store.

The bakery combines traditional breads and rolls with loose treats, made-in-store doughnuts, finished-in-store finger rolls, sweet bakery, fresh cream products and Krispy Kreme. New packaging and labelling give deluxe cookies a contemporary, market-relevant presentation.

Healthier-choice call-outs respond directly to shopper feedback, while SPAR Own Brand, Tesco Price Match, Mega Deals and multibuy promotions balance innovation with accessible value.

Coffee and beverage program

Coffee is central to Glenwell’s foodvenience journey, with three Barista Bar machines supporting breakfast, commuter, lunchtime and treat missions throughout the day. The introduction of oat milk also provides a dairy-free coffee option, giving customers greater choice and ensuring the beverage offer responds to changing dietary preferences.

The customer journey deliberately groups coffee with bakery, treats and Delish food-to-go, creating natural linked-purchase opportunities. Customers can combine a drink with porridge, overnight oats, breakfast products, pastries, cookies, sandwiches or hot food in one convenient visit.

Since the refurbishment, average weekly coffee cup volumes have increased by 22%. The Commodity Group Sales Report provides further evidence of this performance, with Hot Beverage sales increasing by 40% year on year in the week ending 16 August 2026.

Coffee also supports Glenwell’s strongest Food Solutions daypart from 11am to 2pm, while 24-hour opening extends the opportunity across early-morning, daytime and late-night missions.

Technology & Operational Excelllence

Loyalty

Glenwell’s loyalty offer combines digital rewards with relevant value, convenience and community engagement. Barista Bar customers can use the brand’s digital loyalty app, collecting a stamp with each qualifying drink and receiving a free drink after nine stamps. Customers using reusable cups can also earn double stamps, rewarding repeat visits and more sustainable behaviour.

As a BP forecourt location, Glenwell also offers BPme Rewards. Members can earn points on qualifying fuel and in-store purchases, access exclusive offers and redeem rewards against fuel, shop purchases or selected partner vouchers.

These programmes are complemented by Tesco Price Match on more than 1,000 products, SPAR Own Brand, Mega Deals, Delish meal offers and Mayfield’s butchery promotions.

Loyalty also comes from genuine community connection. Glenwell has raised over £38,000 for local causes and supported 32 charities through 90 events over five years. This reflects Henderson Retail’s wider community commitment, which raised over £542,000 and supported more than 400 charities and community groups during 2025.

Online Ordering and Delivery

Glenwell’s foodvenience proposition is currently centred on an outstanding in-store experience rather than online ordering or home delivery. As a 24-hour urban community supermarket, it gives customers immediate access to food for now, food for later, coffee, bakery, local butchery, Delish, Post Office services and everyday essentials under one roof.

The store has invested in making physical visits fast and easy. Larger trolley self-checkouts, express card-only checkouts, wider aisles, clearer navigation, a customer map, digital screens and improved customer flow support quick shopping throughout the day.

Digital channels support discovery and trial rather than fulfilment. Glenwell’s Facebook content, store fly-through video, digital leaflet and QR-linked production-kitchen menu help customers understand the range before and during their visit.

Online ordering and delivery remain potential future opportunities, particularly for freshly prepared food-for-later meals, but do not currently represent a material share of foodservice sales.

Operational Excellence

Operational excellence at Glenwell begins with a customer research-led design. The refurbished store provides wider aisles, improved service areas, larger trolley self-checkouts, express card-only checkouts and a deliberate flow from coffee and bakery through self-selection food-to-go into serviced food.

Technology supports execution through digital navigation, dynamic service-point screens, Electronic Shelf Edge Labels and AI-driven stock ordering. These systems improve availability, pricing accuracy, production decisions and customer convenience.

Production efficiency was embedded into the bakery design. Standard Rational ovens reduce capital and space requirements, while simplified finishing processes protect quality and sales with less operational complexity. Henderson Retail’s broader model adds structured training, food safety action plans, audits, production planning and waste analysis.

The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this model. Weekly unit volume has increased by 32%, customer count by 13%, GP performance by 3% and Food Solutions participation by 12%. The store is therefore processing greater volume and serving more customers while also improving profitability and strengthening its foodservice sales mix.

Social Media Engagement and Influence

Social Media Presence

Social media was integral to communicating Glenwell’s transformation. The campaign followed three phases: building anticipation through “coming soon” and countdown content, creating excitement at launch, and sustaining interest through always-on reasons-to-shop content.
Glenwell’s social channels currently have a combined audience of 1,326. Facebook is the principal channel for local engagement. Pre-launch posts introduced the larger store, production kitchen, bakery and Meals Market. Launch content featured a store fly-through, customer map, new departments, colleague profiles, photographs, promotions and community activity. Post-launch content continues through reels, product profiles, fresh-food features, value messages and community stories.

Production-kitchen support included social videos, static content, food sampling and trial coupons, reinforcing quality, authenticity and provenance. A digital opening leaflet and Fresh Market map also helped customers understand the expanded layout. More than 12,000 printed leaflets were distributed across the BT36 6 and BT36 7 postcode areas, connecting online and offline communication.

Community content features local schools, foodbanks, care providers and charities, creating relevant stories rooted in Glenwell’s neighbourhood role. This strategy uses food, value, colleagues and community to provide customers with continuous reasons to engage and visit.

Online Trends and Influencers

Glenwell’s strategy recognises that customers increasingly discover food and beverage concepts through digital content, local recommendations and visually engaging video. The launch therefore combined store-led social media, paid activity, PR, radio, influencer collaboration, food sampling and community storytelling.

The plan included collaboration with Newtownabbey-based food creator Lauren Jordan, known online as “What Lauren Eats”, who had a reported audience of approximately 101,000 followers. The activity was designed to introduce the Fresh Market, production kitchen, Delish, bakery and Barista Bar through a locally relevant food voice, supported by influencer media packs and post-opening content.

Q Radio supported the launch through promotional advertising, a roadshow and live content from opening day hosted by Ibe Sesay. This promoted new departments, customer giveaways, the fuel incentive and the wider reasons to shop at Glenwell.

The content strategy responds selectively to relevant trends rather than following every viral idea. Glenwell focuses on themes meaningful to its shoppers, including convenient high-protein breakfasts, overnight oats, dairy-free coffee, grain bowls, made-in-store food, indulgent cookies and doughnuts, locally sourced meals and accessible value.

HFSS requirements were considered within the plan, with organic store posting, compliant influencer activity and restrictions on geographic targeting reflected in campaign decisions.

Hot Snacks increased by 127%, Hot Beverages by 40% and Treats by 278%. Produce also increased by 54%, illustrating the wider halo effect created by Glenwell’s Fresh Market and food-led proposition.

The strongest-performing Food Solutions daypart is 11am to 2pm, confirming Glenwell’s growing position as a lunchtime destination alongside its breakfast, coffee, snacking and food-for-later missions.

Reported year-to-date growth includes almost four months of trading before the refurbished store launched. It therefore understates the current performance and full impact of the transformed proposition.
